Some infections can be harmful to expectant mothers and their newborn babies. Some of these infections, such as the flu and whooping cough, can be prevented by vaccinations (all of which are free on the NHS), but the uptake amongst pregnant women remains low.

In 2012, 14 babies died from whooping cough. An NHS vaccination program against this infection was launched the following year, with only 7 deaths in 2013 and 3 in 2014 - none of their mothers were vaccinated.

The MatImms (Maternal Immunisations) app has been developed by a team of experts in child health at Imperial College London to help guide and advise women and their partners on protecting themselves and their babies during pregnancy. The team worked with a number of pregnant women to design the app to fit their needs and answer their questions.

The app:

  • Generates a personalised vaccination schedule based on your due date, which can be synced to your phone's calendar.

  • Gives reminders about when to get your vaccines during pregnancy and your child's vaccines during their first year.

  • Provides information about vaccines and answers concerns about what they are and their safety records.

  • Also provides more in-depth information on how your body fights infection, and how a mother plays an active role in providing natural immune protection for her baby.

 MatImms was developed by:

  • Prof. Beate Kampmann - Professor of Paediatric Infection, Immunity and International Child Health at Imperial College London

  • Marielle Bouqueau - Research midwife at the world-renowned St Mary’s Hospital, London

  • Dr. Beth Holder - Research scientist in paediatrics at Imperial College London

  • Dr. Beverly Donaldson - Research midwife at the St Mary’s Hospital
