Solar energy can be stored as chemical energy (i.e. as a fuel) with a solar quantum energy converter and such processes will be constrained by the laws of thermodynamics. It is therefore important to conduct a 'detailed balance' type analysis which accounts for the unavoidable free energy lost in conversion. This MATLAB script implements a non-linear circuit analysis of any configuration photo-electrochemical (PEC) electrolysis in order to determine the maximum theoretical solar-to-fuel efficiency.
